Wine-making Intern

Job Description:

Shady Lane Cellars is an Estate winery in Northern Michigan situated on a hill above Grand Traverse Bay. We produce 5,000 cases of estate red and white wines over 65 acres of vineyard. We our known for our Blaufrankisch, Riesling and Gruner Veltliner. This vintage is looking very promising for both yields and quality and we are looking for an intern that is excited to gain a well-rounded winemaking experience.

- Excitement to learn in a hands-on environment about wine grapes and winemaking
- Good attitude, strong work ethic, and attention to detail
- Available for 8-10 weeks starting in late September
- Ability to stand for long periods and lift 50lbs
- Ability to work long days and variable hours including weekends
- Ability work safely in a fast-paced, quality-focused environment
- Forklift experience is a plus, but not required

Duties/Responsibilities may include:
- Cleaning (half of winemaking is cleaning and then cleaning some more)
- Vineyard sampling and basic analysis
- Harvesting with the crew
- Working with the winemaker and vineyard manager to process fruit (press/crush)
- Punch downs and racking tanks
- Juice and wine sampling, and basic analysis
- Fermentation additions
- Barrel work (cleaning, filling, racking, stirring lees)
- Filtering and bottling finished wine
- Various other duties as assigned by winemaker and vineyard manager

Our portfolio at Shady Lane Cellars is diverse; from bone dry Riesling to Late Harvest Riesling and dry, rich reds to refreshing rose’. This internship will provide hands-on experience that encompasses every aspect of harvest. We look forward to an intern that is excited about horticulture, winemaking, food and of course wine!

Housing is provided if necessary. Salary dependent on experience.
