Viticulture Instructor/Vineyard Manager

This position is responsible for co-managing the college vineyards under the supervision of the V&E Program Director. In addition this position includes a teaching load of approximately 8-9 credits per semester and one course during summer. Finally, the V&E Department fulfills research and extension duties for the Kansas grape and wine industry. This position will assist in research and extension duties as well as departmental marketing and workshop teaching/hosting.
Collaborate with V&E Department staff to manage and operate HCC Vineyards.
Oversee and perform day to day operations of HCC Vineyards including pruning and canopy management, spray scheduling, crop load management, and coordinate with HCC Winery regarding harvest parameters and activities.
Maintain vineyard equipment (including tractor and mechanized vineyard equipment) and manage vineyard students/interns. Report any major maintenance needs or equipment abnormalities to V&E Program Director.
Teach 8-9 credits of courses in both Spring and Fall semesters as well as one course during the summer - teaching workshops may count as partial credit-hour teaching load.
Serve as a vineyard consultant for the Kansas Grape and Wine Industry and supply extension services as needed, with oversight from V&E Program Director.
Host/teach vineyard workshops across Kansas.
Assist with technical information in grant writing and curriculum building within the department and at semi-annual VESTA meetings.
Bachelor’s degree or higher in viticulture, horticulture, or enology. Experience working in a vineyard is essential. Experience with hybrid grape varieties and mechanized vineyard operations are preferred. Computer literacy required. E.O.E.

The ever-growing HCC V&E program is located in Wamego, KS (www.visitwamego.com). Currently the College has 1.5 acres of vines and is a licensed, bonded winery. The program is managed by Scott Kohl, who grew up as a wheat farmer in western Kansas. Dominic Martin, formerly of Martin Brothers Winery in Paso Robles, CA is the vineyard manager, head winemaker, and teaches viticulture and enology courses/workshops.
