Job Description

The Urban Natural Resource Specialist performs work to support of the collaborative research and development of the Davey Institute’s Ecosystem Services (ES) Team and the US Forest Service’s Northern Research Station (NRS). The ES Team creates, supports and disseminates models, tools and concepts to advance the assessment and improved stewardship of urban natural resources. The Forest Services NRS is focused on generating science that supports the next generation of tools to better understand ecosystem services of our forest lands, including the role vegetation—or other green infrastructure components—plays in controlling stormwater runoff. This position requires applied, working knowledge of forest hydrology, hydrology modelling, and urban forestry to support existing i-Tree tools, their public dissemination and support, and aid in the development of new models. The Natural Resource Specialist reports to the Project Leader of the US Forest Service and the Ecosystem Services Manager at the Davey Institute and will work collaboratively with Forest Service and Davey Institute staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  •   Identify and engage audiences to support the use of i-Tree-related hydrologic models and tools.

  •   Develop framework for i-Tree Hydro implementation for various audiences: planners, stormwater engineers, municipalities, non-profits, etc.

  •   Run i-Tree Hydro model at various scales to support national data development.

  •   audiences.

  •   Provide technical support for domestic and international i-Tree software users.

  •   Act as liaison between i-Tree users, software developers, analysts, researchers and managers.

  •   Advise Hydro development team to guide future application development.

  •   Perform model application testing and provide feedback.

  •   Develop support documents, training materials and website content.

  •   Assist with the development and implementation of research projects.

  •   Maintain and develop databases as required.

    OTHER FUNCTIONS
  •   May assist with other Davey Institute or Forest Service assignments.

  •   May travel to perform training, conferences, meetings or other assignments.

    Minimum Education and/or Desired Qualifications

  •   Bachelor’s degree in Hydrology, Forestry, or other related natural resource management field.

  •   Working knowledge or familiarity of other common hydrology models and tools.

  •   Working knowledge of urban and community forestry management.

  •   Knowledge of local, regional, state or federal partners with potential i-Tree Hydro model connections/interest.

  •   Knowledge of water issues, regulations, challenges and opportunities for integrated green infrastructure assessment and management.

  •   Must have exceptional communication skills and feel comfortable communicating science to a broad audience.

  •   Experience in adult teaching and training a plus.

  •   Knowledge and understanding of the i-Tree software suite applications is highly desirable.

  •   Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including Access and Excel.

  •   Familiarity with spatial software applications used in natural resources management such as ESRI ArcGIS.

  •   Knowledge of forest mensuration and inventory techniques used in natural resource management.

  •   Must possess excellent interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of employees, clients and the general public.

  •   Must have the ability to complete assignments and tasks in a self-directed working environment.

  •   Standing, walking and using hand and optical measuring equipment for training or testing purposes in various terrains.

  •   Valid drivers license with good driving record.

    Environmental Considerations

 Possible exposure to inclement weather if working in the field.
