Job Title: Undergraduate research assistant 

Department: Horticulture 

Reports to: Research assistant/Grower 

Position Overview: Responsible for the care and maintenance of floriculture research plant material and maintenance of greenhouse areas.

Position is May 1, 2017- August 31, 2017. 

 Opening and closing of black cloth each day for photoperiod sensitive experiments. 

 Daily irrigation of crops as needed. 

 Filling pots and transplanting. 

 Application and removal of whitewash to greenhouses. 

 Sanitizing and washing of pots and containers. 

 Maintenance of stock plants, including pruning and harvesting cuttings for propagation. 

 Performing soil tests. 

 Maintenance of cooling pad systems. 

 Applying fertilizers to crops as instructed by technician. 

 General greenhouse maintenance, including cleaning benches, painting, power washing, spraying down walkways and trash removal. 

 Monitoring crops for possible insects and pathogens. 

 Assisting graduate students with research projects as needed. 

Requirements 

 Valid driver’s license. 

 Employee will be required to work approximately every third weekend, as part of a weekend schedule. 

 Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. 

Other skills/Abilities 

 Greenhouse experience preferred, but not required.
