Summer Position: Curatorial Assistant
The Curator for the W.J. Beal Botanical Garden and Campus Arboretum is seeking a student employee to assist with a variety of tasks during the summer of 2017. The student will work with the Curator to document tree age using the methods of Dendrochronology. This will involve sanding tree cross sections with a belt sander to expose annual growth rings. The tree rings will then need to be plotted for verification of date using the method of skeleton plotting and cross dating. In addition, updating plant records as needed in our plant database, BG-Base to record the tree age at the time of death.
Education & Experience
Enrolled in a program of horticulture, plant biology, forestry or related field.
Basic knowledge of dendrochronological methods desired
Able to work with power tools (belt sander) and use of personal protection from noise.
Basic plant identification skills (woody plants)
Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision
Knowledge of general computer skills
