JOB TITLE:                Assistant Grower Propagation Internship (PAID)

TIME FRAME:          Beginning May 2017 (Start date flexible)

REPORTS TO:           Manager of Propagation Department

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serve as a team member in assisting of growing plants and monitoring new product development. Minimum of 40hrs per week is required.

 

JOB DUTIES:

Under the direction of the Propagation Manager, tasks may include but are not limited to, irrigation of material starting from seedling and/or cutting stage through finished plug/liner stage, greenhouse work such as plant maintenance and moving, chemical requirements for plant grow regulators (PGRs) and basic fungicides/insecticides under supervision of licensed pesticide applicators (with possibility of becoming certified if desired), handling and monitoring progress of beneficial insects used for pest control, transplanting, and sticking cuttings. As part of the team, you will assist in new product development of plants, which includes basic care and maintenance, monitoring progress, and inputting collected data to produce records for distribution.  Assist in recommendations for strengthening and improving programs. Work involves walking, sitting, standing, bending, twisting and lifting of up to 30 lbs. Exposure to varying indoor and outdoor temperatures is required.

 

INSTERNSHIP PROJECT:

Each intern is to complete a project during their time at Sawyer Nursery. Projects selected by students can be anything pertaining to plug/liner production. Projects can include but are not limited to, misting protocol for cuttings, PGR use, lighting requirements, or beneficial insect use. Project must be decided upon after 2 weeks of work and approved by Propagation Manager.

 

MINIUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  1. Relevant education pursuit and/or work experience.
  2. Participate in professional team efforts
  3. Communicate effectively through oral and written means
  4. Handle multiple tasks
  5. Ability to work flexible hours when necessary to fulfill production schedule needs
  6. Manage project timelines and organize priorities/workload as needed.
  7. Basic computer experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, Office, and PowerPoint
