Production Development Horticulture Internship

Summer, full-time.

3rd or 4th year student.

A new addition to our offerings this year is the Herbal Plants Internship. This internship was developed for those who really want to focus in and learn all about growing, harvesting and using medicinal herbs, which are being used in the manufacture of products for topical use on horses and dogs.

This internship is for the self-starter wishing to learn from hands-on creation of a brand new garden space.

What you can expect to learn from this program:

  • how to identify and care for a variety of medicinal herbs from seed to harvest

  • basic understanding of the wide range of actions that herbs have as ingredients in topical products

  • how and when to harvest and transform a variety of medicinal herbs

  • how to make tinctures, compresses, and salves

  • how to design herbal gardens according to plant needs, companionship and pest control principles  

 

Responsibilities include:

 

  • Designing and implementing gardens for growing plants to use as raw materials in products manufactured on site.

  • Preparation of gardens to be used as a promotional opportunity to display these “ingredients” for visitors and customers.

  • Performing harvesting and drying of plants.

Qualifications

Eagerness to learn on the job is required. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Ability to identify and diagnose garden problems and communicate problem to supervisor is necessary. Ability to clearly and pleasantly communicate with co-workers and clients, good problem solving and conflict resolution skills.

This job is very hands on. Intern must be willing to work hard and be willing to take on a variety of tasks to get the job done. While performing the duties of this job, the intern is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers; reach and/or lift with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The intern may regularly lift and/or move 50+ pounds.

Job Description

While performing the duties of this job, the team member is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions—hot or cold, rain, snow and/or high humidity. Exposure to airborne particles, pests (ie: insects) pesticides, noise, and interruptions could be frequent. Appropriate dress is required along with the use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment based on job site, Material Safety Data Sheets and current or expected weather conditions, and to adhere to all company safety policies and company codes of ethic. This is a drug-free, smoke-free work environment.
