Research opportunities are full-time for normally one year and may be renewed for up to four additional years upon recommendation of the ARS. Eligible applicants will have received a doctorate degree in an appropriate discipline within five years of the desired starting date.

ARS research is organized into National Programs that serve to bring coordination, communication, and empowerment to 800 research projects carried out by ARS in approximately 90 locations in most states. The National Programs are grouped into four main areas of focus:

  • Nutrition, Food Safety and Quality

  • Natural Resources and Sustainable Agricultural Systems

  • Animal Production and Protection
  • Crop Production and Protection
