Plant Breeding Assistant Growing Manager

Location: Grand Haven, MI

1.) Growing

  • Maintain small lots of plants for breeding purposes
  • Execute seed germination plan
  • Economically and efficiently prepare seedlings for evaluation trials as soon as possible
  • Transplant, grow and prepare seedlings for containerized and field trials
  • Manage 20 acres of field production in conjunction with New Product Development Assistant Manager
  • Organize seedling plants and germplasm plants for optimal long range space planning
  • Plan / schedule / evaluate / follow-up work progress and prioritize work activities
  • Maintain daily record keeping activities of breeding department to monitor crew efficiency and workflow
  • Maintain detail inventory counts of all on hand material in breeding department
  • Maintain and repair equipment and facilities used in breeding production
  • Work with the Breeder to coordinate activity needs requiring a larger workforce

2.) Breeding

  • Execute and organize planned pollination projects
  • Collect, prep and store seed
  • Execute crosses with a team to through hand pollination, fly cages, bee cages, etc.
  • Document all activities in conjunction with Breeder
  • Source germplasm and plant material for breeding purposes
  • Assist Breeder and New Product Development Manager in evaluating and sorting of seedlings
  • Tag new varieties from seedling production and get into growing/evaluation systems
