Job Summary: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: daily decision making for the budgeting, planning and execution of the Landscape Management Plan of a gardening zone; Provide supervision, leadership, coordination of Landscape Services crews to complete maintenance projects, and training in all areas of the materials, tools, equipment, and landscape industry horticultural methods; determine vendors through MSU bidding procedures, acquiring quotes, inspecting contractor work areas and processing invoice payments; communicate effectively via email/iPad/iPhone; maintaining electronic and paper records on materials and equipment used by Infrastructure, Planning, and Facilities employees, faculty conducting research projects, and contractors performing services for MSU; research and recommend the purchase of new or improved tools, equipment, and methods for landscape maintenance; conduct equipment and tool safety training to ensure the safety of the staff, customers, and visitors; interview, hire, and train all assigned personnel; participate in the MSU snow removal plan as a snow supervisor or operator to clear snow in an emergency; participate in Football barricades and cleanup as a supervisor or operator in an emergency. This position will engage in High Performance, leading edge practices, which are Innovative in their approach to increased Stewardship and Service Excellence.
Minimum Requirements: Knowledge normally acquired from specialized training such as that acquired in one year of college, technical, vocational, trade or business school with coursework in horticulture design/build, horticulture or landscape architecture; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience supervising and leading landscape maintenance crews, pesticide application, plant identification; work experience operating a mower, tractor, sprayer, articulated loader; experience developing and deploying a landscape management plan; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; possession of the Michigan Nursery and Landscape Association - Michigan Certified Landscape Manager certification within 12 months. Possession of a valid Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicators certification in category 3A, 3B and 6; applicant must have a good driving record and submit their operator’s license number on their application form for a motor vehicle check.
Desired Qualifications: More than five years of experience as a foreman or supervisor of a landscape maintenance crew; expert knowledge of Michigan State University landscape maintenance processes and procedures, successful track record of leading landscape maintenance crews; more than five years of experience operating mowers, tractors, sprayers and articulated loaders; more than five years of experience supervising full time staff and seasonal staff, conducting daily work plans, tool and equipment training, and conducting employee reviews; experience with Microsoft Office Outlook, Excel, FAMIS, EBS, and Discoverer; ability to coach and lead employees to be successful, create an environment of teamwork and dedication, and support a culture of high performing customer service; experience and knowledge of Infrastructure Planning and Facilities and/or facilities management structure, processes, and procedures. A creative and innovative lifelong learner with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population; able to problem solve within a collaborative team environment; ability to understand different perspectives while utilizing expert knowledge of the technical operations of the job.
