The NMSU - Extension Plant Sciences Department is seeking a Master Gardener Program Manager to oversee the administration and management of the statewide program. The Master Gardener Program is an educational program designed to teach and effectively extend research-based information that addresses home gardening needs in communities throughout the state. The NM Master Gardener Program began in Albuquerque and Santa Fe in 1981 and is currently taught in 13 NM Counties. Master Gardeners are trained by NMSU Specialists and local experts in the fundamentals of gardening in the arid southwest. Emphasis is placed on teaching sound, environmentally safe and sustainable horticulture practices. This training prepares certified Master Gardeners to assist the local County Extension office in answering questions and teaching others. The NM Master Gardener program trains and certifies approximately 300 new Master Gardeners each year and maintains a core of over 900 active volunteers who collectively volunteer over 56,000 hours of service to their communities. The Statewide Master Gardener Program Manager provides dynamic leadership to the NM Master Gardener Program and works collaboratively with county program coordinators (county extension agents) and volunteers to develop and maintain effective delivery of high quality educational programs and volunteer activities for the counties. The program manager is responsible for providing programmatic, administrative and operational leadership to the program throughout the state.

Qualifications

A B.S.in a related field and 5 years of professional experience, is required. A M.S. degree in horticulture or related field and knowledge of or experience with Extension work, educational programs, and development of volunteer activities is preferred. Knowledge of or experience with Master Gardener Programs and with urban horticulture, landscaping, backyard crop production and pest management is also preferred. The position location is to be determined, and may be located in Las Cruces on the NMSU Main Campus or at the NMSU Ag Science Center at Los Lunas, NM.
