General Description:

Peckham Farms focuses on providing paid job training opportunities in the farming industry for persons with disabilities and other barriers to employment. Peckham Farms provides access to locally grown produce for our clients and the public. 

Our organizational commitment to sustainability led us toward eco-friendly farming techniques. The farm uses Integrated Pest Management (IPM), emphasizing common sense practices, scientific concepts and natural techniques to control pests without using harmful chemicals.

The Farm offers fruits, vegetables, annual flowers, and hanging baskets. We grow raspberries, strawberries, tomatoes, peppers, sweet corn, broccoli, zucchini, edemame, bak choi and much more. Hoop houses extend the growing season. We have a large Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Program, and you can find our product at local Farmers’ Markets, as well as the Lansing area Meijer stores.

Skills Desired:

Candidates must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate system ad be pursuing an agricultural degree. Candidate must have farming and/or gardening experience. This position requires passing and maintaining security background checks. Must have access to reliable trandsporation. Must maintain an unrestricted Michigan driver’s license and possess a clear driving record.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently is required to kneel and reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee will be working outdoors and be exposed to outdoor weather conditions and temperature extremes.

You will work directly with our Head Farmer and learn what it takes to run a farm. You will also work directly with our Farm Business Mnager and learn the business aspect to farming. Each intern also contributes to our overall business mission-providing employment to people with significant disablitites and other barries to employment. Therefore, you will also gain valuable experience by working with a diverse group of people.

Stipend:

Positions start at $10.00/hour. There is opportunity to make more, based on experience.

Internship Details:

Interns will assist with growing and harvesting a variety of fruit, flower, and vegetable crops for sales by Peckham Farms. Interns will be assigned responsiblities includng planting, harvvesting and processing produce in compliance with GAP standards. Interns may be assigned a special projects, herb gardening, or aas identified by the Farmer. 

The intern will also assist in the development and implementation of Integrated Pest Management subsystems and assist in assembling and maintaining the drip irrigation and fertigation systems. They will develop and construct trellis systems for grapes, raspberries and tomatoes as well as help with the training and development of Peckham clients.
