1-2 years’ experience in horticulture field preferred, but not required. We are looking for driven, goal-oriented individuals, who have career goals in management.

Horticulture enterprises and related business opportunities are continuing to expand stimulated by the green industries current productivity of approximately $150 billion in sales annually nationwide. These opportunities span a wide range of professionals including designers, florists, growers, garden centers, landscapers and golf courses. The goal of the horticulture management internship program at the Country Club of Detroit is two-fold. First, we strive to provide students entering the horticulture industry with the necessary hands on knowledge, skills, and professional training to pursue a career in the commercial horticulture industry. Most importantly, we look to develop the leadership skills and progressive thinking that will continue the future growth and enrichment of the greens industry for years to come.

Country Club of Detroit is a storied private club on the upper east side of the Detroit metropolitan area in the affluent suburb of Grosse Pointe Farms. The club has a rich golf history, playing host to (2) US Amateurs, the last of which was won by Arnold Palmer, Launching his illustrious career. The Country Club of Detroit… as an incorporated not-for-profit organization which holds to the highest standards, provides a unique site for which to experience all aspects of the greens industry within its 240 acre property. We strive to provide a complete horticulture experience to its members as part of the amenities at an upscale private golf and country club.
Interns will be exposed to all daily maintenance and business practices that gear towards a Platinum Club caliber experience. Interns will play a key role in learning how to manage high end operations, as well as small project management, and will be involved in being a part of the board room setting to help prepare them for a future in the greens industry. The Greens and Grounds department is responsible for providing the facility and its membership with its tournament golf course conditions, lush gardens, impeccably maintained landscapes, floral services for the dining room and banquets and edible crops for culinary use.
The internship will develop the following skill sets:
-Budget creation and management
-Invoice processing and documentation
-Ordering and logistics of inventory
-Staff hiring, scheduling and training
-Quality control procedure building
-Legal documentation for chemical applications
-Vendor quotes & bids
-Contract professional management
-Horticulture and turf techniques and methods
-Irrigation design and repair
Ongoing projects for the 2017 season will include:
-Landscape install at newly re-constructed athletic and bowling facility
-Various landscape bed renovations
-Continued irrigation upgrades and design
