Horticultural Internship

Location: Petoskey, MI
Deadline: April 30, 2017

Coveyou Scenic Farm is a 144 year old family farm in Northern Michigan that continues to expand production of a wide array of greenhouse annual and perennial potted flowers and certified organic vegetables. This 5th generation family farm has transitioned and diversified over the last 17 years to focus on growing for the local market.

Coveyou Scenic Farm is creating an internship position for the spring and summer of 2017 to allow an individual to experience smaller scale horticultural flower production.

A wide and varied experience of greenhouse and field growing of annual and perennial flowers is planned. Seeding, transplanting, pest and nutrient management, marketing and sales along with all aspects of flower care are part of the experience. Creating mixed containers and assisting customers in our on farm market add to the experience. We have two greenhouses in which we grow many different types of annuals and perennials and use a wide array of container types to create amazing displays of color. We grow garden mums and asters in the open air. Creation of our new flower demonstration gardens will be another key part of this internship.

For 2017, we are seeking 1 hard-working intern to work between 3-6 months (March/June – August/November) with our Flower Greenhouse Manager in all areas of raising our flowers and designing and building our demonstration gardens. Lodging is provided in an on-farm furnished house with internet and laundry. Meals will be prepared on your own, with unlimited access to our certified organic produce. A weekly stipend of $175 is also provided with a bonus of $25/week for successful completion of the internship. Interns work five and half days a week, typically 44 hours. We also have a vacation day bonus plan based on the length of your stay. We have additional interns on the farm in our organic produce side of our business making it a nice atmosphere of new friendships.

Sustainability and energy efficiency are a major focus on the farm and we have multiple on-farm conservation components: our geothermal walk-in vegetable cooler, geothermal run produce field heat removal system and market display system, our 18KW PV net metered electrical generation solar array, a new geothermal heated seed germination / transplant growing system. Our flowers are mostly grown in locally recycled plastic and fiber containers.

The farm is located roughly 3 miles from downtown Petoskey, making biking or driving an easy option. This area of northern Michigan is usually bustling in the summer tourism season with numerous festivals, concerts, and other cultural/recreational opportunities. The region is known for its abundance of lakes, beaches, bike trails and extensive Lake Michigan coastline. A car is not required but is generally very helpful.

Successful interns are generally self-motivated, hardworking, detailed oriented, have a positive disposition, work well with others, think creatively to solve problems and are good at working independently. Experience working in a greenhouse is extremely helpful. This internship is not a classroom learning experience, and the ability to handle multiple tasks, work efficiently and manage time is very important.

We welcome applications for the internship from hard-working individuals from diverse backgrounds; the internship is designed for individuals with a serious interest in gaining the skills necessary to grow greenhouse flowers . Anyone with a passion for flowers and the physical ability to work the typical days of a busy horticultural growing season will be considered.

Applicants are requested to send a resume along with an email or cover letter describing why you would like to take part in this internship that outlines your background, work experiences and passions that make you well suited.
