Farm Garden and Livestock Manager / Intern

Start: Spring, 2017 (flexible) - End: October 2017

Summary: Come manage the farm garden and grass-fed beef operation for a hop farm in the Yakima Valley of Washington State. At Loftus Ranches, our primary focus is growing 1,100 acres of hops, but we also want our employees and their families to eat well! We have around 50 head of Red Devon cattle and we practice high-density “mob” grazing to maximize pasture health and productivity and weight gain. We also have several irrigated acres set aside to devote to a diverse farm garden. In addition, we hope to integrate pastured poultry into our operation this year.

Job Description:

  •   Design a farm garden, including planting layout and irrigation system

  •   Prepare soil, plant, irrigate, fertilize, harvest, weed, and care for the 3acre farm garden

    throughout the season

  •   Perform daily tasks to move, feed, water, and care for livestock

  •   Manage pastures to ensure pasture productivity and efficient grazing

  •   Maintain fences, troubleshoot electric fence problems as they arise

  •   Perform various farm tasks on the main farm as time allows

    Requirements:

  •   Attention to detail

  •   Ability to work independently

  •   Ability to prioritize and manage tasks

  •   Experience with gardening and livestock preferred

  •   Must be willing and excited to work with a culturally diverse group

    Compensation: $13.38/hr. Produce from the farm garden, eggs, and meat from the livestock.
