Institute of Agricultural Technology

The Institute of Agricultural Technology (IAT) is an integral unit of Michigan State University based on the main campus in East Lansing, Michigan. The IAT offers Certificate Programs in eleven areas of expertise including three “green industry” related programs ‑ Landscape and Nursery Management, Golf Turfgrass, and Sports and Commercial Turfgrass Management.

Landscape and Nursery Program

The Landscape and Nursery Program at Michigan State University offers those students interested in working with plants, people, and in the outdoors, specialized training to pursue a career in the green industry.  The program combines classroom instruction and theory with practical experience gained through field laboratories and a professional internship.

The Landscape and Nursery Program encompasses the production, selection, use, and management of ornamental plants. The curriculum begins with the understanding of plant growth, development, and identification. Related sciences of soils, entomology, and pathology are integrated with plant knowledge. The mechanical aspects of production systems, equipment operations, and cultural practices are also taught and applied.

Coursework exposes students to instruction necessary to form the foundation for successful entry into their chosen area of the green industry. Graduates of the program are prepared for positions in nursery production, landscape design/construction, landscape maintenance, and garden center operations.

The Landscape and Nursery program is a 48-credit curriculum consisting of two 15-week semesters, one 10-week semester, and a required internship experience. A Certificate is granted upon completion of the program requirements.

Admission Requirements

A high school diploma with at least a “C” or greater GPA is required. ACT or SAT exam scores are not required. Work experience in the green industry is highly recommended. Applications are accepted up to one month before the next semester. To ensure placement in the program, students are encouraged to apply as early as possible.

Career Opportunities

Opportunities for full-time positions are extremely favorable. The MSU Landscape and Nursery Program is well respected by landscape production nurseries, contractors, and retailers around the country. Graduates have been placed throughout Michigan and in many states across the United States. Many graduates of this program become entrepreneurs.
