Equipment

Equipment must be checked out with the permission of either the farm manager or the other members of the HTRC staff. Upon request, the farm manager can assist with equipment and shop tool safety training. Allowable use of equipment not needing special training is at the discretion of HTRC staff. A member of the staff must perceive competency on the part of the borrower before any equipment will be released for use. Hearing protection is available, and the manufacturer's recommended personal protective equipment (ppe) is posted on the tool room door for all equipment at the Hort Farm.

The following pieces of equipment have special conditions for use.
HTRC currently has 2 John Deere utility vehicles. Operators must be trained and have completed (and returned) a medical questionnaire from Olin Health Center. Please speak to the farm manager for details.
The one ton truck (a.k.a. Truck 92) is available for use only by MSU employees who possess a valid medical certification. A copy of this certification must remain on file with the farm manager as long as you wish to use the vehicle. Certification can be arranged through Olin Health Center (353-9137). Please call ahead to reserve the truck.
To operate the Komatsu Forklift, you must possess an Industrial Truck Driving permit with authorization to operate a Reach Truck. Also, like truck 92, Operators must obtain a medical examiner's certificate and file a copy with the farm manager before using the forklift. Use of the forklift will be at the discretion of the farm manager.
The chainsaw is available for use only under the following safety specifications:
  • Hard hat with visor and ear protection must be worn while operating.
  • Leather chaps must be worn to protect legs while running chainsaw.
  • Leather, steel toed work boots (no tennis shoes) must be worn while using chainsaw.

Long pants, safety glasses, and ear protection are needed to use the weed and hedge trimmers.

If you wish to use a tractor at HTRC you will need to complete the ORCBS online training which consists of 2 videos (approximately 33 minutes long) and a short written test. In addition to the online training, you will need to complete a practical driving assessment here at the farm. The university also requires tractor operators to complete a medical questionnaire from Olin Health Center. Once these three portions of training have been complete, ORCBS will issue an operators permit, which must be carried with you at all times while you are using tractors at the Horticulture Farm.
