M.S., University of Maine, 1982
B.S., Nasson College, 1978

Research Interests:

Dr. Hanson is responsible for leadership in education for commercial blueberry, strawberry, raspberry and cranberry producers, and also provides expertise in the area of fertilization and nutrition requirements of tree fruit crops and grapes. He organizes educational meetings for growers, and develops bulletins and popular articles on fruit production topics, gives lectures at various meetings, answers fruit related questions, and serves as a resource person for grower meetings throughout the country.

Dr. Hanson conducts various field trials to demonstrate new production technologies to growers. Currently, he is evaluating the commercial potential on cranberry, strawberry, and raspberry varieties under Michigan conditions, and comparing the effectiveness of herbicides and herbicide combinations for weed management in blueberries. He also coordinates a project to identify and develop management strategies for weeds, diseases and insect pests in Michigan cranberries.

Dr. Hanson's primary area of research interest deals with the mineral nutrition and fertilizer use in fruit production, but he tests various technologies that may have application in fruit production. Some current projects involve:

  • plastic tunnels to extend the season and improve strawberry and raspberry quality.
  • use of cover crops in blueberry production.
  • identification of cranberry genotypes adapted to Michigan conditions.
  • techniques to reduce populations of bacteria, fungi, and yeasts on blueberries.
  • growth regulators to increase blueberry yields.
  • herbicide injury in blueberries.

Dr. Hanson also teaches undergraduate courses on Tree Fruit and Berry Production.
