RESEARCH ASSISTANT I
Department of Horticulture

REQUIRED: bachelor's degree in weed science, horticulture, agronomy, or related field; two to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in weed science, field plot technique, agronomic practices, and farm equipment operation; comprehensive knowledge of statistical analysis and computer applications; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; possession of a valid vehicle operator's license.

DESIRED: strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills; master's degree in weed science or related field research; experience in Good Laboratory Practices (GLP); experience with computer programs (e.g. MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Agriculture Research Manger, Web page design, GPS/GIS applications); experience growing fruit, vegetables, and ornamental crops in field and/or greenhouse; experience in public presentations and in writing research reports, refereed articles, and popular publications; ability to work well with other professionals and students.

BASIC FUNCTION: assists in overseeing and coordinating field, greenhouse, and laboratory research activities; plans, designs, and executes experiments; obtains research data; analyzes results using statistical packages; maintains field and laboratory equipment; orders supplies; coordinates student labor; establishes, maintains, and harvests residue experiments following Good Laboratory Practices; uses GIS/GPS for plot identification; meets with industry representatives to coordinate research activities; presents information in public meetings.
