  • MSU alumnus recognized with national service award by alumni and development association

    Timothy D. Beard III, of New Oxford, Pennsylvania, was recognized with a national volunteer service award by the National Agricultural Alumni and Development Association (NAADA) at Pennsylvania State University last month.

    Beard received two degrees from Michigan State University (MSU)—a bachelor of science in horticulture in 1958 and a master’s degree in food science in 1960.

    The Michigan State University (MSU) Institute of Agricultural Technology (IAT) has been conducting practical plant, animal and technology certificate courses on its East Lansing campus for more than 100 years.

    Commercial horticulture programs focused on fruit, vegetable, greenhouse production and ornamentals are attracting students to Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor and Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City. In addition to local access to MSU academic programs serving agriculture, the community college collaboration enables students to earn an associate’s degree through supplemental coursework.

  • Winning tradition sets grad on path to career

    Winning competitions has become a bit of a tradition for Jeff Elshoff.

     The 2014 horticulture graduate has led the Michigan State University (MSU) Horticulture Club team to four consecutive top four finishes at the annual Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) Student Career Days. A national competition, PLANET’s Student Career Days feature 28 events known as the Landscape Olympics.

  • USDA grants advance regional food systems research

    Researchers on staff and affiliated with the Michigan State University (MSU) Center for Regional Food Systems (CRFS) have been awarded four grants, totaling $1.95 million, from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). The grants, made through NIFA’s Agriculture and Food Research Initiative, will support much-needed research on local and regional food systems in Michigan.

    Robert Schutzki, associate professor in the Department of Horticulture, was recognized from the Michigan Nursery and Landscape Association (MNLA) Jan. 7 at the 2014 Great Lakes Trade Exposition/Green Industry Leadership and Awards Reception in the Pantlind Ballroom of the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The MNLA recognized Schutzki for his tireless efforts and contributions to Michigan’s Nursery and Landscape Industry through an exemplary career spanning over 30 years.
