Course Description
|
An introductory level presentation of information necessary for the construction and operation of a commercial greenhouse. Various types of greenhouse structures and coverings as well as heating, cooling, and ventilation requirements and equipment will be discussed. Methods and equipment for planting, lighting, irrigation, fertilization, and insect and disease control of greenhouse crops are presented. The costs of construction, equipment, and operation will be emphasized. This course is required for Horticulture majors. Objectives l. Familiarize students with different types of greenhouse crops, marketing methods, structures, equipment, maintenance, and methods of controlling the greenhouse environment. 2. Students will learn about routine greenhouse operations and general crop production procedures. 3. Have students independently search for information necessary to build a successful greenhouse business and estimate the costs associated with building a greenhouse and operating a greenhouse. 4. Provide the opportunity to help build a greenhouse and to visit a greenhouse industry trade show. 5. Prepare students with a base of knowledge for additional courses in greenhouse crop production.

Additional Information Attendance at the trade show is required (unless prior arrangements are made with the instructor). There will be no make‑up exams and no late papers will be accepted unless prior arrangements are made (prior to the exam or assignment due date). You are responsible for all handouts and reading assignments. There is an emphasis on mathematical calculations. Please do not say "I am not good at math". You may say “I could use some help with math” if you have had difficulty with math in the past. Please keep talking between students and classroom noise to a minimum once class has started. Questions for the instructor during the class are welcome and encouraged. We will take half a minute of quiet for settling and getting focused at the start of each class.
