Course Objectives:

Understand tree and shrub growth, effect of environmental and cultural conditions on plant health.  Understand and be familiar with maintenance practices including pruning, fertilization, pest management, and planting practices for ornamental plants.  Be able to employ IPM and plant health care programs.

Texts:

                     Plant Health Care for Woody Ornamentals.  International Society of Arboriculture and University of Illinois Cooperative Extension Service.  1997. Required.

                     Harris, Richard W. 1998.  Arboriculture: Integrated Management of Trees, Shrubs, and Vines Highly recommended.

                     Lilly, Sharon, Golf Course Tree Management, Ann Arbor Press.  Highly recommended.

 

Grading:  Four exams will be given, 4 homework question sets, one term project

            Exams:  100 points x 4 = 400 points
            Homework:  25 points x 4 = 100 points - Randomly assigned during the semester

            Term Project:  = 100 points

             Total points possible = 600 - Grading scale below:

                                                600–540 = 4.0                       449–420 = 2.0

                                                539–510 = 3.5                       419–390 = 1.5

                                                509–480 = 3.0                       389–360 = 1.0

                                                479–450 = 2.5                       Below 360 = 0.0

LAB SCHEDULE

Proposed Lab Schedule - (subject to adjustment):

Labs meet and are conducted in the field.  Please dress appropriately.

Class will meet in A182 PSSB unless a different location is noted in the schedule below or announced by the instructor.  Please make arrangements in advance if you need transportation.

Please check at A240-D for cancellations/changes if class is outside the building.

Grading:  Five quizzes will be given during the term (2 plant ID quizzes and 3 pop quizzes).  The homework assignments are due at the beginning of the next lab.  Reminder: HRT 213 and 213L are separate courses, with separate grades assigned!

 

            Plant ID Quizzes:                           50 pts. each

Pop Quizzes:                                  25 pts. each

Homework:                                      25 pts. each

            Final Exam:                                      125 pts.

            Attendance and Participation:    100 pt.s

 

            Grading scale:           90 = 4.0                      80 = 3.0

                                                85 = 3.5                      75 = 2.5 (etc.)
